Deepthi Rao, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of retina and macular diseases.

She was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from the prestigious Johns Hopkins University. She attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where she graduated with honors. Following her internship at the Baptist Health Systems, she completed her Ophthalmology Residency at the world renown Callahan Eye Institute at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She then completed a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at the prestigious Retina Consultants of Alabama in Birmingham.


For several years, Dr. Deepthi Rao dedicated her time and efforts to serving in the Indian Health Service, heading the retina department for one of the most disadvantaged populations in the United States.  Often traveling to remote outposts throughout rural Arizona, she spearheaded the provision of state of the art care to those in need.


Dr. Deepthi Rao is currently an Assistant Professor in the department of ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.  With a life long thirst for learning, her research and clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and uveitis. 


In 2022, Dr. Deepthi Rao co-founded Texas Retina Consultants here in San Antonio. With many years of experience, she remains on the leading-edge of innovative vitreoretinal medical and surgical techniques, and has continually incorporated the latest technologies into the practice.


Dr. Deepthi Rao is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He also holds several professional memberships that include the American Society of Retina Specialists and American Academy of Ophthalmology.


In her spare time, Dr. Deepthi Rao enjoys travel, hiking, biking, and spending time with her husband and her two little children.
