Rushil Rao, MD, MBA is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of retina and macular diseases. Dr. Rao is a native of central Florida. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he studied neuroscience and economics. He earned his medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the world renown University of Alabama Birmingham Callahan Eye Institute and a prestigious fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Associated Retina Consultants in Phoenix, Arizona.

For several years, Dr. Rushil Rao dedicated his time and efforts to serving in the Indian Health Service, providing ophthalmic care for one of the most disadvantaged populations in the United States.  Often traveling to remote outposts throughout rural Arizona, he spearheaded the provision of state of the art care to those in need.


In 2022, Dr. Rushil Rao co-founded Texas Retina Consultants here in San Antonio. He remains on the leading-edge of innovative vitreoretinal medical and surgical techniques, and has continually incorporated the latest technologies into the practice.


Dr. Rushil Rao is currently an Assistant Professor in the department of ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.  He has a passion for teaching and a life long thirst for learning.  His research and clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, hereditary retinal degeneration and uveitis. 


Dr. Rushil Rao is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He also holds several professional memberships that include the American Society of Retina Specialists and American Academy of Ophthalmology.


In his spare time, Dr. Rao enjoys tennis, cooking, eating, and exploring San Antonio with his wife and 2 little children.
